So this evening has been part of a couple of weeks planning.
The scouts were given the task to plan a weekend camp menu for their patrol, it needed to be well balanced and healthy however there was however a twist, one of the meals that was on it, they were going to cook.
So on our first evening they each came a picked a raffle ticket from the hat this corresponded to an item on the food table, Emma kindly had the task of writing down each patrol and what items they had, and with their list of items they went back into their patrols for ideas, at the end of the evening we suggested that they went home to speak with family to what they could make, Andrea sent the parents a list of what each patrol had and it all had to be used, they had a small budget of £5 in which to buy any other items (like their meat) but were only allowed to bring herbs & spices from home, as anything else came out of the £5, so that had to shop carefully.
Up for grabs were things like chickpeas, mixed beans, baked beans, broccoli , courgette, chopped tomatoes, noodles, sweet potatoes, rice, custard, fruit cocktail, jelly, to name just a few...
This week the we broke flag and cracked on, each patrol with their adult leader watching over them and helping advise them whilst they were chopping and peeling, slicing & dicing, cooking and clearing, everyone had a job the hall was buzzing.
They only had just over an hour to dress their table, and plate up their finished meal.
What can we say but wow!!! the meals were amazing.
Our judgeson the evening were Liz our very own GSL, Jan DC of Biggleswade and district and James Assistant DC of Icknield district.
When the time was up each patrol explained what they had made to the judges as they went around and sampled their meals.
The winner of the evening was Lions based on the judges decision, however points were also awarded by Jason & I to the patrols that worked best as a team (all the points go towards the Scout of the Month & Patrol of the Month)
I am sure you will agree that the meals look amazing
