Water Filtration & S'mores

So this evening at scouts we learnt and put into practice about water filtration, and how if you were stuck this could be the difference in a tricky situation to life or death as we all know without water we die.

Each of the scouts brought with them a 1/2 litre empty water bottle, we started by cutting the bottle about a third of the way down from the top to make a funnel, into the funnel we put teased cotton wool poking it well in the neck of the bottle almost making it a bung, then on top of that we added a layer of charcoal, covering the cotton wool, this aids draining as it takes out impurities, then on top of that was gravel (we used pea shingle) this needed to be enough to again cover the previous layer, then on top of that we added a layer of sharp sand again covering the previous layer, then finally we added another layer of pea shingle, we are now ready to add our dirty water, and I can assure you it was black.... as you can see the filter too away most of the mud that was in the water leaving a clear enough water that could be cooked with or drunk should the emergency arise (obviously we did not drink it, although there were one or two that said they would have)

After the water filtration we went and cooked s'mores on the fire that Liam had cook and the Scouts did their vote for the Scouts choice for the Scouts Own Trophy that we will be awarding on Saturday at the Oscars night....
