So this evening we had a visit from who is the Inspector Clarke from Luton North Community Policing who did a presentation to the scouts & parents, the topics that she covered were gangs, drugs, knife crime, child exploitation, bullying including cyber bullying and how we can all stay safe. Times can be very scary if you are a young person growing up in modern day as there is more coverage with the internet of these crimes and the consequences of being involved in them, inspector Clarke asked the age of our scouts and pointed out to that that at 10 years old they are legally responsible in the eyes of the law, so this meaning that if they partake in a crime they can be held accountable for their actions. This shocked a lot of our scouts and what the consequences can be if they are caught carrying a knife unless there is a just reason for it. Inspector Clarke spoke about child exploitation and what to do if they thought that they were being groomed. And without worrying them who they can talk to, I am glad to say most of them said an adult that they trust whether that be us as leaders or their parents, or a police officer.
Having only recently lost a fellow scout Jodie Chesney in London in an unprovoked attack in March (incidentally the media are reporting that the youngsters that are accused of her murder are only 16, 18 and 20 years old) we thought that this would be a relevant topic to cover.
It was a thoroughly informative night and we look at continuing it on further and helping the scouts understand how to keep themselves safe.
